Why?

Every club has different needs, hence football analytics needs to be tailored accordingly. Allow me to translate your achievements into KPIs, create visual representations, and extract actionable insights from your performances.

Below, I've curated selected visuals accompanied by descriptions explaining why each piece of information is crucial.

Pre- & Post-Match Analysis

Passing Network

01

Passing Network

Identify a team's structure in-possession and the connectivity within their teammates. Passing Networks also help uncover team structure and patterns of play.

Possible Question it Answers:

What is their shape in possession, Who are their main progressors, Who are the outlets, Are keepers involved in build-up, How they attack, Are there exploitable gaps, What are the roles of their defenders, etc.

02

Crossing Analysis

Crossing has directly contributed to around 15% of chances created in the Top 5 European Leagues. Crosses are weapons but it's danger can be mitigated by understanding common patterns a team performs to get into crossing positions.

Possible Question it Answers:

Where do teams cross from, Where are they targeting their crosses, How are the crosses delivered (Inswinger/Outswinger), Who are the major threats from crosses, Who creates the most danger with crosses, etc.

03

Crossing Build-Up Analysis

"Cutting off the head of the snake." By understanding how the build-up occurs, we can effectively stop crosses from coming in. This analysis therefore helps understand the common trends and patterns in a team's chance creation process.

Possible Question it Answers:

Where do teams build-up their play, Who are the main facilitators for crosses, Do team's progress the ball directly, Are the teams threatening in opposite sides before a cross is made, etc.

04

Passes per Defensive Actions

Assess a team's pressing efficiencies with PPDA. This visual breaks down the number of passes an opponent is allowed before defensive actions are taken. A low PPDA indicates an aggressive press, potentially disrupting opponent's build-up play.

Possible Question it Answers:

How are teams setting up their pressing trap, Do teams press high effectively, Where do they win turnovers, Do they press as a unit cohesively, How do you get the best out of your forwards defensively, How high are their defensive line, etc.

Final Third Analysis

05

Final Third Analysis

This visual dissects team movement within crucial attacking zones. It can identify strengths or weaknesses to act as a preview for the coming games. The picture on the left is just an example of the many possible actions we can use.

Possible Question it Answers:

Where are teams threatening from the final third, Where are the key passes coming from, How are pressing traps being set, Do they cross a lot or shoot on sight, Should team set up more defensively or attack more, etc.

06

Corner Analysis

This visual breaks down corner kicks, providing insights into set-piece routines and their effectiveness. Coaches can identify patterns and pinpoint key players for aerial duels, and devise specialized strategies for exploiting weaknesses.

Possible Question it Answers:

How often do they pass the ball short, Who are the aerial targets, How threatening are their set-piece takers, Do they send the ball to the near post or far post, Who normally gets first contact, etc.

Graphs

07

Expected Threat (xT) Analysis

Expected Threat shows the change in probability of scoring a goal by moving the ball from one place to another. By examining its value, we can quantify the value in which an attacker adds to a team in a game with their passing as well as the areas in which they receive the ball.

Possible Question it Answers:

Who are the most threatening players in the team, Who are the key distributors, Who are the key outlets, Where do teams generate threat from, etc.

08

Goal Kick & Build -up Analysis

Identify common trends of build-up from goal kicks to understand passing patterns from deep. Break down the successful kicks which failed to result in sustainable attacks and patterns in which teams utilize goalkeepers.

Possible Question it Answers:

Are the keepers involved in build-up, Where do they distribute the ball towards, What are the tendencies of the goalkeepers during goal kicks, Where is possession after goal kicks, etc.

Chance Creation Maps

01

Shot-Creating Pass Map

Beyond the usual pass maps, the shot-creating pass map looks at the passes that provides substantial value to a team's offensive chance. They allow us to identify the key events that make a playmaker. Specialized visuals to understand combination between passer and receiver can also be made.

Possible Question it Answers:

Who have been the top creators from different zones, Where is the desired target of the playmaker, How are the attackers receiving passes, What can be done to close the gaps, etc.

02

Carries Map

Assess a players' movement and ball progression across the field. It provides more value than solely plotting 'successful dribbles' as it maps the direct route taken by the player and the chance created from it, making it easy for us to picture a player's threat with the ball.

Possible Question it Answers:

Where do players like to dribble most, Do they prefer cutting in or driving it to the byline, What do they do after the carry, Are opponents surrendering space for the carry to happen, etc.

Carries Map
Defensive Actions Analysis

03

Defensive Actions Map

Identify key zones a player defends on the pitch to gain insight into their ability to cover ground, and responsibility within the team. This visual breaks down important defensive actions, showcasing where key interventions occur on the field.

Possible Questions it Answers:

Where is the defender most active on the pitch, Are the centre-backs active at defending the box, Are the midfielders stepping up to engage their markers, Are the attackers pressing high to win turnovers, Can the defenders defend the wide channels, etc.

04

Territory Map

Assess a player's involvement in the game and their spatial distribution across the pitch. The visual offers a comprehensive view of the areas in which the player operates in, which indicates their influence in different areas of the pitch.

Possible Questions it Answers:

Is the fullback or winger inverting into central zones a lot, How often do the strikers peel out wide or drop deep to get involved in play, Are defenders playing high up the pitch, Are goalkeepers involved in build-up, Are players accessing touches inside the box or in key attacking areas, etc.

Touch Map
Passing Clusters

05

Passing Cluster

This visual highlights the 3 most common passes / progressive passes a player does on the pitch. Coaches can use this to infer tendencies or habits on the ball.

Possible Questions it Answers:

Do the players usually play short or long passes, Do they prefer to recycle possession or progress the ball further, Are their passing tendencies dependent on specific teammates or are they instructed to play the ball into a certain zone, etc.

06

Shot Map

This visual displays locations in which shots are taken on the field, providing an insight into shot frequency, player positioning and areas of goal-scoring potential.

Possible Question it Answers:

Should a player have the license to shoot from sight, Does the attacker have great sense of positioning in the box, How frequent are strikers making runs into the box for tap-ins, Are the players overperforming their Expected Goals tally with their technique and is it sustainable in the long run, etc.

Shot Map
Shooting Analysis

07

Shooting Zone

Building on the Shot Map, we have a visual that breaks down the placement of the shots on goal. It shows the zones frequently targeted by the strikers and can be used for analysis purposes to understand their tendencies in front of goal.

Possible Question it Answers:

Where does the penalty taker normally kick his penalty towards, What are the shooting habits of the strikers, can defenders and goalkeepers work together to cover off preferred sides of the striker to force them into shooting at least favorable zones, etc.

08

Post-Recovery Passes

This visual showcases the pass after possession is won back by the players. It provides us insights into quick counter attacks and effective transition strategies, as well as player's tendency and composure upon retaining the ball.

Possible Question it Answers:

Are players safe or progressive with the ball upon winning it back, Where are the progressive passes targeted, How quickly can players identify counter attacking opportunities, Where do players retain possession, etc.

Player Scouting

01

Role Ranking System

Role Ranking System

Footballers are no longer bounded by positions, but roles on the pitch. Hence why I have developed a system that ranks players based on the different roles & function on the pitch.

The Role Ranking System assigns varying weightages to different metrics based on their relevance to specific roles, reflecting my perspective backed by extensive research.

We can tailor your needs and specific KPI to identify suitable players to fulfill a specific function. For example Haaland's data of last season show him to be a lethal finisher, but having him drop deep to get involved in play would expose his weaknesses.

02

Player Similarity Index

Building on the Role Ranking System, we have a Player Similarity Index. The Similarity Function is based on K-Means Clustering, to identify similar players based on playstyle.

Therefore, we can identify or scout for players who share common similarities or playstyle to a specified footballer. This would help scouting department identify cheaper alternatives that suits the playstyle.

Player Similarity Index
Player Comparison

03

Comparison Chart

This visual gives a visual assessment of performance metrics across different players, teams, or time periods. It enables coaches to compare key indicators side by side, facilitating a rapid understanding of strengths, weaknesses, and trends.

Comparison Chart streamlines the analysis process. Coaches can efficiently identify areas for improvement, make data-driven decisions, and adapt strategies based on observed differences or similarities.

Bait Passes

01

Second-Ball Analysis

Chaos is difficult to quantify within traditional football statistics but its influence is critical for analyzing a team's playstyle or assessing a player's dominance. Hence, I have developed a method to quantify Second-Balls.

Possible Question it Answers:

Who are the best duelers in the team, Who benefits from the chaos a long ball brings, Where do teams win their second-ball, Do they have numerical superiority on one side to ensure they win the duel, How were second-balls used to dominate set pieces, etc.

02

Rebound Analysis

Finding the distinction between offensive rebounds and defensive rebounds, provides us new insight into players who reacts well inside the box.

Possible Question it Answers:

Are strikers quick to follow up with a shot, Are defenders aware of their surroundings at critical moments, How are defenders using their bodies to win fouls when preventing a rebound, Are there supportive movements from other attackers to follow up, etc.

Rebound Analysis

03

Second Ball Analysis

Bait Passes

Not all "Successful Passes" coined on football statistical platforms like Wyscout or Opta are good passes. They could be passes that put receivers onto uncomfortable situations and they loose possession in dangerous areas.

Thus, I have created a new metric called 'Bait Passes', where it provides the context needed to examine passers and their ability to make passes that are successful and safe.

Possible Question it Answers:

Where do players loose possession most often, Who have been careless in possession, Are receivers inviting the press with their posture, Do the players have good spatial awareness, etc.
